Corialent

12 years ago, Rodrigo decided that the Coca Colas of the world shouldn’t be the only ones who get to have all the fun in the advertising industry. He was sick of all the dull, corporate, navy blue and white B2B work out there. Business people are people too. Corialent specializes in B2B marketing that doesn’t suck. And they want to get the rest of the industry drinking that delicious KoolAid.

a glimpse inside the house of melanin: the viewing

ASH WILL

A GLIMPSE INSIDE THE HOUSE OF MELANIN, 2017

Human(s) in park
8 ft. x 10ft.; 11ft. x 14ft

This conceptual art piece involved 102 black people. 102, represents the number of unarmed black individuals that were shot and killed by the police in 2015. My aim was to present a visual representation of this statistic in a predominantly white space such as the surrounding areas of Rittenhouse Square Park.

The models were separated into four groups. Each group left City Hall making their way to Rittenhouse Square Park. Once the models reached their destination, the flag bearer, Stephanie Cunningham, walked into the center of the park as this flag was used to symbolize a safe space for those in the black community. The meeting, procession, and staging of models were documented, as were the reactions of the unsuspecting audience. In the end, the cops were called, as was to be expected.

CREATOR

ASH

ARTIST STATEMENT

ash blurs the lines between artistry and activism through exploring the idea of direct action as a tool to affect change. With this philosophy, social, racial, and civil rights issues are typically combatted through methods of violence or non-violence. ash provides an alternative perspective on the way life could be. Presenting black people targeted and subjected to the brutality of systemic inequities in America as true art, and against feeding into the mass appeal.

Baldwin states in his essay, The Creative Process, the artist's role in society, being an isolating one at that, must make aware to society that within this visible reality hides a hidden reality. Often times this hidden reality can be discovered through the internal strife of non-blacks. ash sheds light on this apprehension through inducing confrontation of fears simply by manipulating a space with that fear.

The Melanin Rainbow Flag

Stephanie asks you to, "imagine a panoptic view of the varied Black identities and communities throughout Africa and the Diaspora. A visual representation of our black hemisphere, a spectrum of shades of brown, a melanin infused rainbow: black berry, black gold, ebony, honey brown, brownin, redbone, and high yellow."

LOCATION

Society must accept some things as real; but he must always know that visible reality hides a deeper one, and that all our action and achievement rest on things unseen.
